Chewy Chocolate Brownies
You know what I love? Brownies! Know what I love even more? Chewy chocolate brownies made from scratch! So that’s just what I made.
My husband’s gotten pretty good at box made brownies. In fact, I haven’t made them in years because he’s figured out the secret and has it all under control. Well, folks! I’ve finally gotten in out of him. Wanna know the secret? Here it is…Oil! Yup, the box mix calls for oil, and he’s perfected the ratio of oil to water. Also, mix and get out! Stop mixing once the ingredients come together. Pretty simple, huh?
I want to take what he’s taught me and find out what the actual ingredients are in those boxes. So I took to Pinterest looking around for some recipes and found a few that I’m really excited to try. I’m linking you out to Karina @ Cafe Delights for the recipe I tried this weekend. The reason I chose this one is because she’s also figured out some secrets to making perfect chewy brownies from scratch. Also, she has a VIDEO guide!! I love my visuals! Plus, there’s tons of reviews for this recipe (a pretty new feature to Pinterest) and I know you won’t be let down!
**Note: I didn’t have the chocolate squares on hand to add before baking, so mine DID NOT turn out as hers did. However, the basic recipe is a total keeper, so I just had to share.
Be sure you take time and read her post, she’s got some really “Ah-Ha” steps. If you ever wondered how to get that crackly crust on the top, or how to make sure your brownies come out with a moist center, then she’s got what you need. I’m all about figuring out how to take recipes to the next level, so this post was a really great find. I don’t just want to make brownies, I want to make the BEST chewy chocolate brownies! I want to gather the “best of” from all the recipes I read, then put them all together to create one EPIC dessert. Okay, let me take a step back for a moment. Clearly my pursuit of legendary status is getting the best of me. But seriously, doesn’t every mom want to hear “my mom makes the best…“?!
I do have a few things I want to try next time, so I’m sharing some ideas with you to get your creativity flowing:
Boost your Brownies
- Espresso powder/chopped, whole coffee beans
- Strong coffee & powdered sugar to create a glaze
- A dash of cinnamon
- Chopped pecans, walnuts, butterscotch or chocolate chips
- Add a few dollops of Nutella before baking (this would be perfect for brownies made in a cupcake pan)
- Caramel layer brownies-this duo has figured out the perfect way to add caramel to the center of their brownies! This is a semi-homemade recipe, meaning brownies from a box. I’m totally OK with that, I have no shame is admiring that box brownies with a twist may be the way to go! And you know how much a love a good visual, there’s a video tutorial!!! This will be my next brownie adventure, for sure.
So, there you have it. An awesome recipe for chewy chocolate brownies & some inspiration to make it even better! You can check out my Pinterest boards for some other “from scratch” ideas. And to see what other Pins I’ve been working on, click here.
Let me know if you have any other tips and tricks for getting the perfect brownies, together we’ll conquer the brownie lovin’ world!!

Thanks! The kids were more than thrilled to gobble them up so I had a reason to make another batch.
WOW these look so good ! thanks for the recipe! i like the collage picture instead of a bunch of giant pics. good idea!
Oh, thanks Jackie. The visual is usually what I go to when deciding if I’m going to do a recipe. I figured everyone is the same…right?!
I love the ideas you have for boosting the brownies. The espresso will be great for serving ‘adult kids’! Thanks for the tips – these look amazing!
But you know you’d have to double the batter & put espresso in half. The kids would NOT let “adult only” brownies happen.
Yuuuuuuum. I like the idea of putting some ground espresso in my brownies! Delicious! With a kick!
Right?! Such a yummy idea!
Oh my goodness. These looks mouth-watering!! I’m definitely going to have to try and make these!
Thanks Kristen, my kids are in agreement with you!
Yummy!! My hubby is King of the box brownie mix as well. I won’t even attempt to make brownies in my house. But I may have to try these because my girls love Nutella.
Ayanna, you could even just let him keep on keepin’ on with those boxed brownies and add fun stuff to them. I added a link in the post to a site where they did just that! Check it out.
From scratch, moist, gooey brownies….yes please!!!!
Yes, Yes, Yes! Who wouldn’t?
Omg, those brownie add-ons sound SO good! I need to try the Nutella trick!
Fun & yummy ideas! I always think of Semi-Homemade (Sandra Lee from the Food Network) She always took box and made it better.
These look SO good! I love the idea for boosting the brownie too.
Brownie boostin’…one of my many talents-HA! Let me know if you give any of them a try.
These look awesome! I love brownies then add Ghirardelli fudge on top with ice cream. 🙌🙌 Amazing!
Oh my gosh!! Crystal!! Now I have to make brownies again (not that anyone’s gonna put up a fight)!
There is not much better than a delicious chewy chocolate ice cream, these look wonderful 🙂
Sarah, brownies with ice cream, YAAAS! Can you believe I didn’t have any ice cream, what was I thinking?!
I’m making these tomorrow!!! I love brownies! And this recipe is just mouthwatering! Thanks for sharing this! You just made a brownie/chocoholic very happy! 🙂

Oh my YUMMM! These look delightful! I love a good chewy brownie.
Jenn, you’re gonna love these…follow her recipe and you won’t be let down!
My mouth is literally watering right now. I want to make these with my toddler this weekend! Whenever I make the boxed brownies they never turn out like how they look at the bakery. They taste pretty good, but I want that crackly top you are describing! I love the add in ideas, too. I never say no to a bit of cinnamon! Or espresso…
Brittany, you have to give her recipe a try. I’m planning on doing them again, but adding the chocolate squares on top to make them extra gooey this time!
These look every bit of chocolatey, chewy, and delicious! I will be adding this to my dessert recipes to try. I think I might make them today, and I will probably add pecans just as a little crunch. 😋 I cannot wait to try it.
Amber, I hope you got a chance to make them. They’re so simple! My mother-in-law would love the pecans.
These look delicious! I love chewy brownies!
Me, you, and I think all of everyone else!
The pictures in the post are making my mouth water. These brownies look so yummy! Thank you for sharing.
Kristen, ya gotta make it happen! It’s really easy, give it a try, you’ll be happy-happy.
Oh my goodness, these look so delicious!! I can’t wait to surprise my husband with these next weekend!
