Verses to Pray Over your Children (& yourself!)
If you’re anything like me, convenience is our BFF. Even when it comes to having Bible verses handy to pray over our children. Honestly, I don’t go anywhere without my prayer cards, and now I’m never without these Bible verse bookmarks either. So my fellow prayer warrior, I’m sharing this handy little bookmark with you. Cover your kids in prayer, wherever you are!
Did you know that when we lift our requests to God using the promises He gave us, it’s a way of saying that we trust Him at His word, that we know He’ll honor His promises. We’re saying “here it is Lord, here’s what you said, I believe in You, And I’m asking You to do these things in my children’s lives”. We honor God when we stand on His promises. Here’s a few quotes from R.A. Torrey that beautifully sums up why we should be praying, (and praying in advance):
“The reason why many fail in battle is because they wait until the hour of battle. The reason why others succeed is because they have gained their victory on their knees long before the battle came. Anticipate your battles; fight them on your knees before temptation comes, and you will always have victory.”
“Oh, men and women, pray through; pray through! Do not just begin to pray and pray a little while and throw up your hands and quit; but pray and pray and pray until God bends the heavens and comes down.”
“Prayer is the key that unlocks all the storehouses of God’s. . .grace and power.”
Well, dang, now don’t that make you want to fall on your knees for these sweet babies of ours!
For some time I’ve been gathering these verses to pray over my children, I had them written on different pages, but FINALLY! I’ve gotten myself together long enough to create the bookmarks. And of course caring is sharing, so I’m sharing them with you. But ya’ll, don’t forget to pray these verses over yourself too. We all need to be covered in prayer!
Virtues: There are standards written of in the Word which guide us on how we should model our behavior. I pray these verses over my children (and I know you will too) because we live in a world that is newly defining their own set of virtues every day. Friends, our biblical virtues are under attack and with each generation, the youth are being pulled away and believe me, there’s nothing passive about the methods being used. Let’s not be passive about lifting them in prayer.
- Compassion for a hurting world
Galatians 6:2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.
- Self-discipline to abide in faith and do what’s right, always
Mark 14:38 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.
- Responsible over their choices and actions
Galatians 6:5 For we are each responsible for our own conduct.
Bold: Speaking of being bold, that’s exactly what we need to emulate for our kids. We need to be serious, bold, and intentional about how we live our lives both in front of them, and in our prayer closets on our knees. Our kids, more than ever before, have so much they’ll have to turn their backs and say “No” to. These verses perfectly lay out how to be bold when standing against the strong tides of opposition.
- 2 Corinthians 5:11 Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.
- 2 Timothy 2:24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:1 Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more
Guidance & Blessings: Lastly, I’ve gathered together other verses that I generally pray over my kids. Verses for their character, growth and protection.
- I pray my child would be brave in the face of adversity, knowing that you are with them.
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
- I pray my child would humble themselves & seek your will when faced with difficult choices.
James 4:7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
- I pray my child would find their identity in you, Lord and not in worldviews.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
