Skipped church? Feel bad? No need, here’s why.
There are occasions when getting out is a bit tough. Whether it be a car problem, sickness, or even being out of town. And if we’re being honest, I think we’ve all missed a day because we were just so worn out by the events of the week. However, there are tons of ways these days to receive the word right where you are. Try one (or all) of these-whatever suits you:
- The Bible app for your phone or tablet
- Your church website may offer different types of online studies, and possibly an app of their own
- You can sign up for online studies through some of your favorite websites (Proverbs 31 has some great ones)
- I love listening to worship music at home and inviting God to join me right where I am
- And of course, you can break out the Bible and pickup where service ended last week, or start a study of your own
We shouldn’t think of church like a duty, routine, or a chore that we’re obligated to do. I heard Greg Laurie say that church can be thought of like a gas station for your car. Church should be a refueling station for your soul. A place where you go to get recharged, and refreshed. A place to find solace with others who are in need of comfort and companionship, and to be energized for the pilgrimage.
You should know this, God wants you to be near to Him, He has no desire to force you to do so. He also doesn’t want you walking around stressed out because you didn’t make it to service. I think when there’s a true passion, missing a day isn’t an indication that your desire is dwindling (just try not to make it a habit), and it’s also not likely enough to be the forming of a new habit. It also doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the refueling, for Matthew 18:20 says “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”. How encouraging is that! Grab someone and get your praise on!
So, in conclusion, church is a wonderful resting place to gather together, fellowship, and learn about God. However, if you find yourself not in church on Sunday, be reminded that God is everywhere, and you should invite Him to be where ever it is that you do find yourself.
Just so you know, I’m mostly writing this to me, and if you happen to receive encouragement too…well great!
Hebrews 10:25 (NLT) And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
