Ladies first! So, why do we put ourselves last?
I heard a report on the radio this morning and it struck me. The number of obese women in America has gone up, in fact it’s gone up more than men and children. But what really struck me was the comment that it could possibly be because women tend to put themselves last.
I know I do this all the time. Women are making sure their families are healthy first. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve splurged and spent extra money on some super healthy foods, and realized that I ate NONE of it! I do it without even thinking. I buy the good stuff, then immediately portion it out for lunches, without making sure I pack for myself.
So, here’s the problem. I see it, I hear it, but I’ll likely do nothing about it. I’ll continue on making sure everyone gets what they need first, then take care of myself (and I use “take care of myself” loosely here). I could sit here and have a call to action saying, “Ladies, let’s put ourselves first” but that’s unrealistic. Mother’s have always done this, and will continue to do this. Almost like putting yourself last is just a part of mothering. We work hard for our families, tending and providing for them. Personally, I find joy in making sure they have all they need, and I know what I do is worth more than rubies to my family.
However, we can all start small:
Buy a few more pieces of fruit or veggies and keep them at work (because if they’re already there you can’t forget them at home).
I know personally, I can continue to eek out a few minutes here and there for the gym. Something’s better than nothing!
And if I feel I can’t make it to the gym, I’ll bring my walking shoes and do a 1/2 hour walk on my lunch break.
Ladies, this may be pushing it, but you may even have the option of doing a small workout somewhere in an unused room at your office.
In lives that can be as busy as ours, it’s all about thinking outside of the box. Let me know what out of the box ideas your doing!
